Edith Deen has selected courageous women who did what they did, who changed history, and who contributed to their own and subsequent generations all because of their devotion to their Lord. The mini-biographies are just long enough for a daily devotional walk with strong women who serve as “lighthouse” role models. Deen tells of their admirable deeds without endless dissection of their creeds.
The volume is packed with church history and introduces us to some names that may have been unknown to us before. We learn of queens, martyrs, a US first lady, missionaries or evangelists, influential wives or mothers of famous men, and pioneers of faith-based organizations, often ignored by the world. The time span opens in AD 203 with brave Vibia Perpetua’s martyrdom and continues up to the twentieth century. Deen shows us that God has had His Christian heroines throughout nineteen centuries.
For a gift, I recommend the attractive, hardbound burgundy classic edition with gold letters. For personal use, the paperback version serves just as well; I purchased one recently from Abe Books for a total cost of $3.48.
