Can we base our lives on the Bible, indeed our ETERNAL lives on it? We all face an eternity, whether we want to do so or not.
We all need to settle this issue. There is an outstanding account of one person’s efforts to settle this in the June 2019, edition of Decision magazine. The account is by none other than Billy Graham himself.
His article of 1984 is entitled “The Infallible, Everlasting Word of God.” Graham tells of the night he struggled with the question of the veracity of the Bible. He says the following:
At one time in my life, I had a struggle believing the Bible to be the authoritative Word of God. Some professors and other intellectuals were expressing their own doubts about it and pointing to alleged contradictions in the Bible. I was young, just out of school, and was having my first experiences in preaching. Seeds of doubt began to grow, and I struggled over this question of the integrity of the Word of God. Then one moonlit night in the mountains of California I went out alone with my Bible. The turmoil in my mind was a sharp contrast to the peace and serenity of the natural beauty around me. Finally, I laid my open Bible on the stump of a tree and prayed “O, Lord, I don’t understand everything in this Book, but I accept it by faith as the Word of the living God.” And I can truly say that since that moment I’ve never doubted that the Bible is the Word of God. Furthermore, God has confirmed this to me time after time, as I have witnessed the power of the Word of God at work in the lives of people.
These are the words of the man who became known as the one who constantly said, “The Bible says, . . .”
Regarding his own vocation as evangelistic, Graham was aware that the issue is even more serious. He said,
The evangelist must be thoroughly convinced of the infallibility of Scripture. Only then can he preach with authority God’s promise of salvation and forgiveness to all who call on the Name of the Lord and God’s warning of judgment for those who do not.
Today, an army of apologists have set us up on the Internet to deal with supposed contradictions and doubts about the Bible. The extraordinary efforts of men like Frank Turek, the late Norman Geisler, the late Nabeel Qureshi, and the not-so-well-known Ben LaCorte, make it easy for us to shoot down the accusations that criticize the Holy Scriptures.
Armed with these powerful sites, we can boldly state along with Billy Graham that the Bible is “the infallible, everlasting Word of God.”
Today Graham's faith has become sight as he enjoys the heaven he has waited for! A billboard with his photo reads simply, "Gone home." It is "well with his soul."
